‘Only In Ludlow’ Loyalty Card

Support your local independent shops and have a chance of winning a unique ‘Only in Ludlow’ gift hamper.   Pick up a free loyalty card, fill in your personal details and present it every time you spend over £1 in a participating shop. Once you have obtained 20 stamps hand it in at your nearest participating shop to go into the hamper draw. The draw will take place quarterly in the following months: March, June, September and December.

 

Why shop local?

Good for the local economy. Research indicates that for every pound spent with a local business, 63p stays within the local economy, compared to 40p with a national chain;

Good for the environment. Local shops sell products from local farmers, producers and crafts people, therefore the delivery journey is shorter and has a smaller carbon footprint;

Good for the community. Shops are a valuable part of your community. Take the time to shop and get to know shopkeepers and fellow customers. Catch up on friends and meet new people;

Good for you. Locally-produced food will be fresher, more seasonal and you will know where it comes from;

Gallery 131

Gallery 131 is one of the newest retail ventures in Ludlow – occupying the address, 131 Corve Street that was most recently home to Material before the decided to concentrate on their London store. It now houses an ever varying stock of objects that have been found by the shops two business partners, Tony Wise and James Miles.

Tony and James both have many years expertise and experience in their chose field of design and antiques. James specialises in a slightly early period of work – Arts and Crafts – whereas Tony’s passion is for more mid-century to 70s pieces. None of these dates are exclusive though – as Tony says of the shop it is a collection of good objects, paintings and sculpture and if the item is good it will often sit easily (and stylishly) alongside other good items. James and Tony have previously shown their stock at fairs and exhibitions and Gallery 131 is their first retail space. Because all the pieces (from studio pottery to furniture) are one off you are always going to find new pieces in their shop; Tony showed me his personal highlights from their current stock when I was there – including a plaster work sculpture by Frederick Leslie Kennett dating from the 1960s and a Brian Bradshaw painting.

Kaboodle

Owned and run by Shayne & Hazel Adams, Kaboodle has been open in Ludlow since 2000.

In a slight diversification from our brief, they also have a shop in Church Stretton that they opened in 2004, but they are true to the ethos of Only In Ludlow if not the strict definition! Both Hazel and Shayne had a background in retail before opening Kaboodle, both of them having worked for other Ludlow shops – Roundabout Stationery and Clearview Stoves.

Kaboodle sells a whole gamut of gifts, homeware and clothes much of it ethically traded. At the rear of the shop is a wide selection of clothing much of it sourced from Nepal where Kaboodle sponsors a teacher at the charity Classroom in the Clouds.

The front section of the shop includes a wide selection of jewellery plus a fantastic selection of small gifts including a brilliant fake slug when I visited.

Black Bough

Firstly a disclosure . . . Black Bough is my shop.

Opened in March 2014 by Alex Barter and myself, Adam Withington, Black Bough is a shop that reflects the interests and knowledge that we both have individually and collectively.

Alex’s knowledge base is vintage watches and, in particular, vintage wristwatches. His experience in this somewhat singular field was gained while he worked at Sotheby’s as a member of their watch team, progressing from department assistant in 1996 to director and head of their watch department in Europe, via a stint of 4 years running the watch department in Geneva. My interests lie in design, craft and art; for a period of 13 years I ran a block of artists’ studios in West London, arranged exhibitions and helped those involved within the creative industries to develop their businesses.

Black Bough reflects our disparate and broad interests; we sell one off items made by local artists, vintage pieces that we pick up on our travels, vintage wristwatches from Omega and Rolex to Longines, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe and everyday items such as greetings cards and gift wrap.

Marches Pottery

Marches Pottery has been at 45 Mill Street since 1982. The pottery shop at the front of the property displays the work of potter, Andrew Crouch. Behind the shop space and visible through a large window is his studio space, and further back beyond his studio through one of Ludlow’s hidden garden spaces is his firing studio; home to his kilns.

Andrew trained at Bath Academy of Art and his practice is hand thrown reduction-fired stoneware; to the non-pottery-term-literate this means that all of his pieces are thrown on his potter’s wheel before being kiln fired (for the second firing in an open flame kiln). He produces functional ceramics and tableware, from cups and saucers to bowls plates, pitchers and jugs. All are distinctive stylish pieces in 3 main glaze colours: tenmoku (brown), celadon (pale green) and white.

Alongside his own work, Andrew also stocks a small range of pieces by other local craftspeople, ceramics by Mark Griffiths, wood bowls by Paul Caton and woven textiles by Alison Morton. All complement the aesthetic of Andrew’s own work; consistent craftsmanship which is beautifully displayed.
